| How to Prevent Identity Theft!
Here are some steps that will help protect you from Identity Theft. 1) Shred all bills and any thing that has your social security number, date of birth and full name on it. You can also use a black marker to mark these items out before shredding, for added security. Make sure you select a good shred. A cheap shredder will shred paper into wide strips which, can be pieced back together very easily. 2) Never give out personal information like your social security numbers, date of birth and your full name to anyone over the phone, as a response to an email or to someone who comes to your door. 3) If you get a pre-approved credit card offer in the mail, put it in the trash. 70% of the time these are scams. Think about it, how can you be pre-approved with out running your credit report to see what your credit score is? 4) Sign up for LifeLock’s or CreditReport.com’s fraud protection. I personally recommend LifeLock which, you can visit at lifelock.com. 5) Keep all bills locked up in a filing cabinet at all times. Keep other personal information locked in a safe that is also bolted to a beam in the floor or wall. Never leave personal information just laying around. 6) If you have any personal information on your computer or if you pay your bills online, put a password on your computer and make sure that you turn it off when not in use. Macfee has a good personal protect software that asks for a password in addition to the one that Windows asks for. Two passwords to log on to your computer may seem too much but, it offers the ultimate protection. When it comes to your most valuable assets (your identity), is it not worth it? 7) If using a online account, always log out of the account before closing your browser. 8) If you get an email saying that you have own a lottery or asking you to be a partner in some business transaction, delete it. These are what are called fishing emails. They are emails sent out to people trying to gain personal information such as your bank account number. And once they have this information, they will clean your account out and there will be nothing that you can do about it. These people are generally in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. After all, how can you win a lottery if you did not purchase a lottery ticket? 9) If you get a pre-approved credit card offer in the mail, trash it. 90% of the time these are fishing mailers, mailers sent out by scammers who are just trying to get your personal information. After all, how can you be pre-approved if they have not seen your credit report yet? And they can not run your credit report with out your personal information. |
